PINEWOOD DERBY INFORMATION

Official District Rules

Pinewood Car Building Workshops

There will be one workshop in February. Ask your Den Leader for details.

Scouts must be accompanied by a parent.

March 24 (Fri.), 6-8 pm   Check-in at the church

· Wear your uniform for photos.

· All cars, including Open Class *, MUST be checked in the night before or they will not race. By race day, all racers are entered into the track computer, and to change the race order for a late entry is time-consuming and frustrating for the boys.

· Check-in is not a quick process.  It takes a while to get your car to its optimum weight without exceeding the limit. Usually you will have to make some kind of alteration.

· Please have your car completed prior to check-in. Tools are available for fine-tuning, and volunteers can help, but be prepared to do the work yourself.

· Weights on the underside of your car can cause clearance problems on the track.

March 25 (Sat.), Race Day!

8:30 am  Open class (for siblings and parents)
See all the cars on display, and watch open class.
9:00 am  Tigers race, receive trophies.
After Tigers   All other Scouts race in this order:      Wolf ** Bear ** Webelos I ** Webelos II ** Trophies

We should finsh the racing well before Noon. Please be prepared to help clean up and setup the room for the next day.

· Tiger Scout Class Trophies
Speed: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Show: Best of Show, Best Scout Theme, Best Do It Yourself

· Cub Scout Class Trophies
Speed: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Show: Best of Show, Best Scout Theme, Best Do It Yourself, "WAY COOL DUDE!" (replaces Sleekest), Most Original, Best Paint Job

Rules of good sportsmanship extend to parents as well as the Cub Scouts.  Please provide a good example for your son by supporting all the boys in their efforts and by winning or losing graciously.

Although parents may feel compelled to “assist” at various levels of the building process please
remember that the educational purpose of the Pinewood Derby is defeated when cars, engineered to a professional level, compete against cars created by 7-12 year old boys
.

*Open Class cars only have to conform to rules of size and means of propulsion (gravity only, no motors, rockets, propellers, etc.)  There is no weight limit or restriction on materials.

**Please note that while First United Methodist Church generously offers their facilities for our events, there are usually other meetings going on in various parts of the church as well.  Please remind your boys that if they must leave to use the restroom, to respect other church members and not disrupt prayer groups or other gatherings.  When not using the restroom, boys should confine their activities to the Fellowship Hall where the race is being held.
